Recycling Options for Households

Fluorescent bulb Fluorescent Lights Home

North Carolina residents are strongly encouraged to recycle spent fluorescent lights from their homes. Recycling options vary across the state. Provided below are options compiled to help residents find the option that is most convenient for them.

Help from your local government

Some cities and counties collect fluorescent lights in their household hazardous waste programs. Contact your city or county government to learn about local options.

Drop-off locations

Various retailers and electric cooperatives across North Carolina offer free recycling of compact fluorescent lights (CFL) to their customers. We recommend you always call ahead or ask your local retailer if they offer recycling options. Follow the links below to find more information about these programs including drop-off locations near you.

Mailback Programs

Mail-back programs generally include a primary waste collection container, an outer shipping container, a prepaid shipping label, and instructions. For North Carolinians living in remote or isolated areas, this maybe your only recycling option. This is not the most cost effective method for residents to recycle CFLs; however, there are several mail-back programs to choose from.
